Present Simple or Present Continuous

The difference between the present simple and present continuous can cause a lot of problems

We use the present continuous for talking about things happening NOW, and also for situations which are only temporary

We use the present simple for long-term or permanent activities or situations.

Beware that there are some verbs which cannot be used in any of the continuous tenses.  Some verbs will sound strange to you in the continuous form, and it is a good idea to learn what these verbs are: Verbs that Cannot be Used in the Continuous Tenses
